All email messages open docked at the bottom of the main window. And none of the 3 options in the Display options works. Options > Display > Open messages in: Any solutions? I'm using Thunderbird 68.7.0 (32-bit). Thanks.

re :All email messages open docked at the bottom of the main window.

This means you have the 'Message Pane' visible. A single click on an email in the Thread Pane list will open the email and display the contents in the 'Message Pane'. This also occurs if you use the arrow keys on the keyboard to select and move up/down the Thread Pane list. The selected email in Thread Pane will turn from bold font (unread) to normal font (read) assuming you have settings to automatically mark as read when opened.

If you close the 'Message Pane', then a single click will not open the email in the 'Message Pane'. The selected email in Thread Pane will remain in bold font (unread).

Regardless of whether the 'Message Pane is open or not, a double click will open the email in a chosen way and that depends upon what you have selected in 'Options' > 'Display' > 'Open messages in:'

So, the question is this, are you double clicking on the selected email in list to invoke the method of opening you have selected in Options ?

Bingo! Thanks for this. No, I wasn't double clicking.

Is there a way to use the selected 'Open messages in:' option if single clicking a message and while the Message Pane is closed?

I selected 'A new tab', but can I advance to the next message in the Thread Pane while the message tab is opened?

Thanks.

Yes - In that tab - showing a selected open email:

  • Go > Next > Message or Unread Message

You can also use shortcut keys whilst in that tab:

  • 'F' = Go > Next > Message
  • 'N' = Go > Next > Unread Message

If next unread message is in a different folder you will get a pop up window asking if you want to advance to next unread message in a folder.

Option to consider: If your monitor screen is wide, you could consider changing the position of the 'Message Pane'. By default you are seeing the 'Classic' layout with 'Message Pane' below the 'Thread Pane'. You can change it so it appears on the far right, so you get to see the opened email in a more full view. This works very well visually if your screen is wide, so that you do not need to shrink the 'Thread Pane'. This means you can use the single click and see the opened email in a more fuller view. It also has the benefit of still seeing the Folder Pane without reselecting a tab.

'Menu app icon' (3 lines) > Options > Layout > select 'Vertical'.

See example image below.

Just what I needed. Useful shortcuts. Thanks!

Excellent! I'm glad I have a 2-24 inch dual monitor setup. Thanks!
