No joy in 'standard' instructions for recovery via Profiles etc.

Appears we did not successfully save - back up properly (on our own ) the Quantium 7x ? info before the 'downgrade' to ESR 68x.

Hi mackenzir7, since Firefox 67, profiles can only be upgraded. When you run an older version of Firefox, if there's no profile matching that version, Firefox will create a new one.

You can migrate your bookmarks using one of the automatic backups. If there is other data you need, you might need to copy more files. So let's get started:

(1) Open your OLD profile folder

Profile Manager Page

Inside Firefox, type or paste about:profiles in the address bar and press Enter/Return to load it.

This page should list at least two profiles and could list many. (Each profile has two folders and one or more buttons. Do not use any Remove buttons!)

The profile that Firefox is currently using -- your Firefox 68 profile -- will have this:

This is the profile in use and it cannot be deleted.

Find your earlier profile and use the Open Folder button for its Root Directory (ignore the other one).

That should launch a new Windows/File Explorer window showing your old profile contents.

Double-click into the bookmarkbackups folder. Each file name should contain the date and number of items. Is there a recent backup here that you want to restore to Firefox 68?

If so, I suggest:

  • right-click the backup > Copy
  • on your Windows desktop: right-click > Paste

(2) Use the Restore feature

This will replace your Firefox 68 bookmarks with the ones in the backup. When you expand the Restore menu, click Choose File, and point Firefox to your desktop where it should recognize the backup you pasted there.

This article has more details: Restore bookmarks from backup or move them to another computer.
