Hi HerbertM, what did you do to clear the cookies?

Although those old cookies are gone, as soon as you log in again, the site should set new ones. As long as you don't clear those cookies again, sites that set a "persistent" cookie -- a cookie that doesn't expire at the end of your session -- should recognize you as logged in after closing and re-opening Firefox.

the only time the cookies would be deleted was when I went to Cookies and site data and clear cache/ and also cookies and site data (or when I ran something like Ccleaner). Now it apparently clears whenever I close firefox.

So I am apparently missing something although I have trial and error tried just about everything.

Remember the log in ID and password remain stored and all I need to do is click on log in as the auto fill is there. But that takes several secords more and is a constant nusiance. So, I have reached the limit of my ability to problem solve this unless there is a reset to defaults somewhere (assuming I do not lose my bookmarks) .

Best is to create a cookie allow exception with the proper protocol for involved domains and if necessary use "Delete cookies and site data when Firefox is closed" to remove unwanted cookies.

In case you use "Clear history when Firefox closes" or otherwise clear history.

  • do not clear the Cookies
  • do not clear the Site Preferences
  • clearing "Site Preferences" clears exceptions for cookies, images, pop-up windows, and software installation and exception for password and other website specific data
  • clearing "Cookies" will remove all selected cookies including cookies with an allow exception you may want to keep

nothing seems to be working.

I have tried everything presented.

Today i reset defaults and then when that did not work, I refreshed Firefox and that did not work "clean" so I added back add-ons.

Funny thing, though, sometimes it does work, eg, I wil close firefox and open it 2-3 minutes later and it has me logged in, but the next time it does not log me in.

so there is a glitch somewhere.

I feel like I am a dermatologist eliminating possibilities.

By the way, I forget the timing but it showed up about the time I updated windows 7 Pro for the last time.

I will be updating this PC soon to win10 pro-soon meaning when I have a full open day to work on it

Hi HerbertM, do you use any external software that may remove cookies between sessions? Possibly Advanced SystemCare and CCleaner have the ability to do this, depending on how they are configured, and other programs may as well.

Yes, CCLeaner, however, I have that normally set to not clear cookies unless I want it to (which also resets recent places) and when I want to do a more thourough cleaning I clear the cookies. I also learned to clear data but not cookies inside firefox.

I am fairly good trouble shooting but this one stumps me.

Here is another odd issue--I have 2 other PCs set up similarly and all 3 sync so bookmarks and settings are the same, in theory.

My other 2 PCs do not have this problem (those are my lightweight traveling PCs).

So I made sure that the cookies setting were the same on this pc as are the settings on the good PC'S.

I have already refreshed FF. If I uninstall FF, and do an installation, will bookmarks and passwords be still available to automatically be in the new install, or do I need to save bookmarks etc.

I do not know what else I can do.

Hi HerbertM, if you remove Firefox without removing profile folders (decline any option to remove your Firefox data), the installer should find the existing data and re-use it. Also, the Old Firefox Data folder on your desktop has your pre-Refresh profile folder.

Thanks-its gonna be an evening project. So should I always keep the Old Firefox Data file? I have always been afraid to get rid of it.

with 3 PCs, if I synch the FF among them, if I do not have bookmarks in thsi PC is am working on, will the no bookmarks populate the others or vice versa.

At some point it will be too old to be a useful backup, so that could be your guide. Maybe a few weeks?

I confess I don't know which Firefox is "the boss" in that situation.

If you are concerned about a problem caused by Sync, you could disconnect this Firefox from your Firefox Account before doing the reinstall, and wait to confirm you haven't lost data before reconnecting.

thanks--already signed off FFon all three and will bu bookmarks before I do it.

In the meantime , as long as I am doing this I am getting rid of all unnecessary bookmarks including what I see is a ton of duplicates and some pretty old ones.

Housekeeping.

good to know I will not wreck anythng by getting rid of that folder.

Did you look at the cookie exceptions?

You can try to create an allow exception for websites that you want to remember you.

  • Options/Preferences -> Privacy & Security
Cookies and Site Data: Manage Permissions

You can also do this via "Tools -> Page Info -> Permissions" for the domain in the current tab.
