Why do tabs sometimes die, creating an "IPC Launch #1" process?

Running Firefox Linux 71.0 on Linux Mint. Occasionally when I try to open a tab, the page in it doesn't load, and I can't load any other page in the tab. In System Monitor I see an "IPC Launch #1" process for each time this happens. If I kill the process, the tab then displays "Your tab has crashed" with the usual form to submit a problem report. Anyone know why this is happening? Thanks in advance.
