I'll be needing to upgrade to windows 10, and I expect it will require a whole fresh install instead of an update (because it's evil). How can I save my passwords so I can access them when I install the new operating system?

In the event that the passwords information is lost, you should record all information in a separate text file somewhere else on your hard drive, or written down. You can easily copy and paste if you need to do so. If you are concerned about someone else looking at that file, you can compress it using a password.

You can backup logins.json and key4.db in the profile folder for the passwords.

You can copy files like these with Firefox closed to the current profile folder to recover specific data. Note that you should be cautious with copying SQLite database files if you previously had problems.
