Thunderbird window keeps opening wide, not at last size

A couple days ago Thunderbird auto-updated to 68.3.1 (32-bit). Now the windows consittently tries to open to 1040 pixels wide. I have always run it around 875 pixels wide, to fit on a side portrait-rotated monitor.

The previous version (I don't know the version number) always came back at the size I closed it. This new version ignores the close width and always starts at 1040 px wide. Height and uper-left-corner coordinates stays the same as they were at closing.

I will gather whatever info you need.

I bug report might already exist, but file one anyway https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/enter_bug.cgi?product=Thunderbird

Help/Troubleshooting Information, click Open Folder, close TB. Delete or rename session.json, restart TB. Is the window size retained now after closing and restarting?

I tried 'sfhowes's idea, by renaming session.json. Restarting Thunderbird opened wide, then I resized, closed and reopened. It was narrow again. I closed and opened again and TB went back to wide. Thunderbird now randomly opens to the previous width or 1040 px wide. I cannot determine a pattern to whether TB will open 1040px or previous width.

Here is my bug report: https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1605663

There's one more simple diagnostic you could try: delete or rename session.json again, then start in safe mode (hold Shift when you launch TB). Size the window, then close TB and restart in safe mode. If the window width is retained after closing and restarting in safe mode, I would think it means the layout was broken (safe mode uses a default layout), and not necessarily that session.json was corrupted.

To fix a broken layout, launch in safe mode, check 'Reset toolbars and controls' and click 'Make changes and restart'. If none of this works, we shall wait for responses to your bug report.
