Using email I enter my password and log on, Firefox puts a new password in automatically and asks if I want to update, the new password does not work.

I'm logging in to BT mail. Address and password enters automatically correctly. On clicking "Sign in" the password box fills with dots an I am asked by Firefox if I want to update password. I did updated 1st time. On subsequent tries the new password failed and original password failed. Had to reset password and now can't use automatic completion of address and passsword as it produces error.

If you add the block exception manually yourself then you need to make sure to prefix the correct protocol (in most cases https://).

  • Options/Preferences -> Privacy & Security: Logins and Passwords: Exceptions

When the Block exception is set properly then Firefox shouldn't ask to update a stored password. A block allow exception doesn't affect currently stored passwords for this host, but will prevent adding a new password or get a configuration dialog for updating. You can still manually check and update the password in the Password Manager.

In this case, my suggestion would be to either manually edit the password in Firefox Lockwise or simply delete to login from Firefox Lockwise so that you can save it again next time you visit your email.

See Password Manager - Remember, delete and edit logins and passwords in Firefox for more information on editing or deleting logins using Firefox Lockwise.

Hope this helps.

Thanks, can now use autofill but on signing in to email Firefox still enters another password which I don't update.

Does the password that appears in Firefox Lockwise for that login match what it should actually be?

Some websites modify the password field when you submit the form and Firefox will want to update the currently stored password in this case which makes it invalid. You can create a password Block exception in cases where Firefox wants to update the password.

Yes it does. Another contributor suggested I block the "save logins and passwords pop-up" for the problem sites. This I have done but Firefox still tries to put a new password.

But why does this happen at all? When the "Save Password" dialog pops up and I click to reveal the password it is just a newly randomized password. As long as I say "don't update", everything works fine but for the life of me I can't figure out why it's shoving in a new random password every time I login with the valid password.

It could be a feature of the website itself.

To make it harder for some programs to grab your login information, some websites will move the password to a hidden text field and replace the password field with random text when you click submit. Unfortunately, Firefox detects the random text as the password that you have entered.

Some websites use JavaScript to modify the password field once the form is submitted and possibly copy the password to a hidden field as a protection measure. Firefox sees this as a password update and offers to store the modified password. You can create a password block exception with the proper protocol (https://) for this domain to prevent Firefox from asking to update.

They claim they're not doing that but what you're describing makes sense.

Thanks!

Hello, I'm posting a reply because I cannot log in and am paralyzed without doing so. In calling the first number listed in big letters on google in trying to call you, I reached a false response from India, one who wanted full access to my computers. BS. My password has been off and on workable for a couple of weeks now. Sure, I've checked "renew" or whatever is offered. Have also tried older password/s. Not being able to reach someone to fix this is horribly frustrating. Have been with you for about 25 years. HOW ABOUT SOME HELP !?

Hi Carlton!

Firstly, I just want to let you know that Mozilla doesn't have a phone number for support. It's a community-driven support and all support is offered on this forum. Any phone numbers claiming to be a Mozilla support line are scams and should be avoided.

As for your issue, I'm not entirely sure what problem you are having. Can you please create a new thread and describe your issue clearly there. This thread has been solved, so it doesn't appear on the contributor dashboard as a question that needs help, so it's unlikely you will get any help on this closed thread.

In the new thread that you create, please make sure to clearly outline the service you are having issues with and any relevant error messages. This information will help contributors more efficiently help you.

Please feel free to post a link to your new thread as a reply to this thread if you want.
