It's possible that there was a change to Tracking: 3-bar menu > Options (Privacy & Security) - Browser Privacy. However if you don't have one, you would be better to install an ad-blocker such as https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/ublock-origin

If your question is resolved by this or another answer, please help other users by marking the best reply as Solved. Thank you!

In Firefox 70 and later the shield icon is permanently present in the location bar and opens the enhanced tracking protection panel, so do not get confused.

Do a malware check with several malware scanning programs on the Windows computer.

Please scan with all programs because each program detects different malware. All these programs have free versions.

Make sure you update each program to get the latest version of their databases before doing a scan.

You can also do a check for a rootkit infection with TDSSKiller.

Hi kgtuckton, if the above replies don't resolve the issue, could you describe what page you see adverts on?

The following phrase makes me think of the Top Sites on the Firefox Home / New Tab page:

Previously, there were just blank squares.

For more information on how to manage content on that page, see: Customize your New Tab page to hide or display content.
