Chosen solution

On a per email basis: click on 'Write' to create a new email. Write email then click on 'Options' in the top Menu bar select 'Return Receipts' and or Delivery Status Notification' click on 'Send'

To set up an auto always request a return receipt and determine how Thunderbird handles return receipts:

Via 'Menu Bar' toolbar: Tools > Options > Advanced > General Tab

or

Via 'Mail Toolbar' toolbar: 3bar menu icon > Options > Options > Advanced > General Tab

click on 'Return Receipts' button choose settings. click on OK

You can set up settings to ask, but that does not mean it will always yield results.

Many mail servers ignore Delivery status notification request these days partly as anti-spam mechanism. Some servers will also remove the 'Return Receipt' as they do not want users to send out additional emails. Even if the 'Return Receipt' gets through to the recipient, the recipient may turn off auto replies or choose to ignore the request.

How to set up "Return Recipt" always on for one account, but off for other accounts in TB?

Right click on mail account name in Folder Pane and select 'Settings' This opens the 'Account Settings' window

  • select 'Return Receipts' for account
  • Select 'Customise return receipts for this account'
  • Make the selections for that particular account.

Repeat the same action for each mail account.

When finished click on 'OK' to save and close 'Account Settings'.

Suggest you exit and restart Thunderbird to ensure those settings are saved into preference files.

I am using TB 68.7.0 (64-bit). The TB => about TB menu says it is up to date. I changed first the global preferences and then the account settings. To try if everything was ok, everytime with the different settings I sent various emails from my TB account - with the option => return receipt checked - to my icloud and hotmail accounts. Restarted TB. When I opened the messages received in my icloud and hotmail accounts I was not asked to sent a received receipt. I dod not receive any confirmation of emails reception. So for me, thi s feature is not working I tried to search for an add-ons, but nothing. The info online are out of date or not useful. I followed the instructions posted on 23 Feb 2020 (so a recent one) "How to set up "Return Recipt" always on for one account, but off for other accounts in TB?" but again not working. Either the feature is not working/available or I do not see a specific setting because is not clearly exlained / buried in a complex procedured.

re :When I opened the messages received in my icloud and hotmail accounts I was not asked to sent a received receipt. Confirm - those two mail accounts are set up in Thunderbird and you are reading those received emails in Thunderbird and not via the webmail accounts. You have set up the option in Thunderbird to 'allow return receipts' for both the icloud and the hotmail accounts.
