Why doesn't the new firefox let me login to youtube, patreon, messenger and a whole load of other sites?

So my Firefox updated to the new version (70) and it doesn't work properly on half of my most regular sites. In particular it won't let me login to messenger(.com), youtube, mediafire, patreon and several other sites. Either the login box never loads properly or it doesn't respond when I fill in my details and click 'login'.

I have tried with other browsers and everything works fine. I have also tried disabling all my firefox add-ons, but the problems all still persist. It's definitely the new browser. I couldn't even login here to post this problem, that's how bad the new browser is. I had to uninstall and go back to a previous version, sync everything and now it all works fine again. It's definitely the new browser, and I suspect lots of other people are having these problems but can't report them because the new browser doesn't let them login here to report it.

Well done Mozilla. You've really set a new standard for releasing software that wasn't ready. What's next, a browser that doesn't work on Wordpress sites?

Hi TomS,

can you check if those pages work in a private mode?

I am loathe to reinstall Firefox 70 because I work on my computer and having a browser that simply doesn't access half of my regular sites is incompatible with making a living.

Thanks, but I think I'll leave it a month before trying again with updating Firefox. I mostly posted this so that others having the same problem know it isn't just them.

I also have this (or at least a very similar) problem since the 70.0 update. I can confirm that Google Accounts will not let me sign in (when I enter my email into the form I can not click on "Next" to get to the site that lets me enter my password) and also can not use the Facebook page (I can log in, but can not accept cookies and only see the the uppermost part of the page, the blue ribbon, where clicking on the buttons does nothing). Using a Private window I can do all that. I have tried clearing the cache and cookies, and it did nothing.

@Igor M. Can you check the following steps?

  1. Enter about:support in the URL bar
  2. Click the Open folder button in the 'Profile folder' line.
  3. Go to storage subfolder
  4. Close Firefox
  5. Rename the default subfolder
  6. Open Firefox
  7. Is it OK now?

@TyDraniu That did not change anything. Also, I can not log in to my Firefox account in a normal window, I get the following message:

"Cookies and local storage are required

Please enable cookies and local storage in your browser to access Firefox Accounts. Doing so will enable functionality such as remembering you between sessions."

I have tried allowing all cookies (usually have Cross site and social media trackers blocked), alas, it did not help.

I hope Monday brings a solution from Mozilla's side...

TyDraniu,

Thank you for your efforts. What Igor is describing is the exact same problems I have with the new Firefox. Including the login problem with Firefox accounts.

Hopefully a fix is coming, I'm going to keep using a slightly older version until then.

In another thread, it was suggested to also rename the storage.sqlite file (at the main level of the profile folder) to see whether that makes any difference. (I haven't tested this myself.)

It is possible that your firewall or other security software blocks or restricts Firefox without informing you, possibly after detecting changes (update) to the Firefox application. Remove all rules for Firefox from the permissions list in the firewall and let your firewall ask again for permission to get full, unrestricted, access for Firefox and the plugin-container process and the updater process.

So, it took a bit longer than I predicted, but my Firefox updated today and all problems I can see are fixed. Thank you to all who helped!
