Chosen solution

SOLVED. Many thanks sf, your suggestion was spot on. The attach button did work in Windows Safe mode and, in addition, on return to Windows normal mode, the problem had disappeared. (I don't know how the offending start up programme was removed.....). Very grateful for your response and the speed. artanne

Does the same problem occur in Windows safe mode? If you can attach files in that case, it suggests there's a startup program blocking the operation, such as an AV program scanning outgoing mail.

What may have happened is that during the restarts between safe and normal Windows mode, a startup program such as AV performed an update that made it compatible with TB. In any case, to avoid future issues like this, it's a standard recommendation to not allow AV programs to scan the TB profile folder or SSL connections. The real-time background AV scanning is sufficient.
