How do I get Firefox to open each individual link in a new TAB without all of my links opening in the same TAB and overwriting the previous one? Maddening

NOTE: about:config browser.search.openintab set to true does not work. Each link that I click on all opens in the same TAB. I can manually click the " + " sign and force a new tab, but in crunch time when I need to open 5+ windows very quickly, I will forget and when its all said and done, I end up with one TAB which is the last link opened.. ugh!

Hi Benjamin Funchess, could you describe in a little more detail where the links are that you are clicking?

Firefox will load links in the same tab if they are not specially coded to open in a different window (for example, using target="_blank") and Firefox normally will divert that to a new tab instead. Firefox doesn't have a setting to send ALL links to a new window/tab.

Search engines generally have an option in their settings to code links for new window if you prefer. Most other sites don't have that setting.

More generally, you can use an add-on to modify links in pages with a target attribute directing Firefox to open them in a new window/tab.

For example:

https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/open-link-with-new-tab/

In its settings you can specify whether to send ALL links to a new tab, or only links from other sites (same site stays in the same tab).

Would that help?

That's for Firefox's optional search bar (on the Options page, Search panel, you have the choice of adding the optional search bar to the main toolbar). It is not for links in web pages.

Of course, I also should mention that Firefox provides 3 ways to direct a link to a new tab. This should work with normal links, but may fail with scripted links:

  • right-click > Open Link in New Tab
  • Ctrl+click
  • middle-click with the mouse scroll wheel or middle button
