Nested folders automatically expanded on Thunderbird start-up in Favorite view

I have recently started using the Favourite view to display my folders but unfortunately when I start up Thunderbird any nested folders that I have always show as expanded with all of the sub-folders visible. Despite collapsing these the next time I start up Thunderbird they are all expanded again. I do not have this issue in Full view but would really prefer to use Favorite view. Any help much appreciated!
