For years, Firefox has been failing to work on certain websites

more options

Every couple of years I get sick of Google Chrome and try to go to Firefox. Things mostly work, but sometimes they don't. The things that don't work seem to be buttons and menus. I run Firefox on Linux; today I'm on Fedora 28 with Firefox 66.0.4, but my issues seem to transcend time- probably 8 years or more. But Chrome scares me, so maybe we can address this and get it figured out.

I'll include some specifics to get down to the details of why Firefox fails. Here's a website that I just went to: https://lcsc.com/ . After you get there, a New Coupon windows pops up. Apparently "Coupon in Your Pocket" is a button, but nothing happens when I click on it.

I've been having problems at Aliexpress, too, where it asks me to login but I can't because the login button is unresponsive. But let's not try to fix Aliexpress, perhaps it would be better to focus on the one website so we don't get distracted. And it's easy- just go to it and the coupon will pop up.

I've had problems on other websites that I can't recall right now. But this lcsc.com problem seems to be pretty straightforward, so I decided to report it in the hopes that I can get Firefox to work once and for all. I don't want to have to keep going to Chrome.

See the attached screenshot.

Make sure you are not blocking content.

Start Firefox in Safe Mode {web link}

A small dialog should appear. Click Start In Safe Mode (not Refresh). Is the problem still there?

One issue that seems more common lately is Firefox's Content Blocking. When it is blocking content in a page, a shield icon will appear at the left end of the address bar next to the padlock icon. This article has more info on managing this feature:

I turned off Block Pop-up Windows and it worked fine. (Do you want my coupon?)

You can add an exception for that site to allow pop-ups.

That was very good work. Well done. Please flag your last post as Solved Problem as this could help others with similar problems.

Thanks! I could actually login to my AliExpress account, too. I'll keep that shield in mind.

I'm dedicated to staying off of Chrome... this response is much appreciated.

I spoke too soon. When I go to Facebook, I am greeted with a blank page. That is, I can see the top menu with "Home", "Find Friends", "Create", etc. but the majority of the page is blank. This is www.facebook.com/mschwage . I have cleared Cookies and Cache, and restarted in Safe Mode. No joy.

I don't see the little shield next to the URL. Is there anything else I should be looking for?

Hmmm

Many site issues can be caused by corrupt cookies or cache.

Warning ! ! This will log you out of sites you're logged in to. You may also lose any settings for that website.

If there is still a problem, Start Firefox in Safe Mode {web link} by holding down the <Shift> (Mac=Options) key, and then starting Firefox.

A small dialog should appear. Click Start In Safe Mode (not Refresh). Did this help?

While you are in safe mode;

Try disabling graphics hardware acceleration in Firefox. Since this feature was added to Firefox it has gradually improved but there are still a few glitches.

Opps, sorry.

Start your Computer in safe mode with network support. Then start Firefox. Try Secure websites. Is the problem still there?

I had already tried clearing my cache and cookies and starting in safe mode. It hadn't worked. I tried again, and this time it did! Facebook shows up just fine, and continues to show up, days later. So it appears to have corrected itself.

However, if I go to this webpage: https://www.lenovo.com/us/en/laptops/yoga/700-series/Yoga-730-15/p/88YG7000965 and click on "Ratings and Reviews", then "Questions and Answers", nothing happens.

Chrome and Edge work.

I do note that on a recent YouTube video from Adafruit, where they're talking about WebUSB, they discussed how it's not available on Firefox (yet), and one of the commentators mentioned that he generally keeps a number of different browsers available so as to ensure he can load any website. So I'm not crazy, I'm not the only one with issues.

The Review and Q&A section is powered by a service that loads from bazaarvoice.com. If you don't allow scripts from that site, then you can't change between the two sections. Can you think of any reason that script might be blocked on your Firefox, for example, by an add-on?

Oh, Lordy... egg on my face (for the n'th time in my life). I went to safe mode... it worked. I went back into regular mode, then shut off my add-ons (Ghostery and DuckDuckGo Site Privacy Protection).

It works now, even better than Chrome. It's that bazaarvoice.com that was the problem.

OK, I'm going to remember to do the safe mode and clear cookies/cache prior to whining here.

Thanks again!

Hi mschwage, a lot of these review/comment services that work across multiple websites are targeted by anti-tracking extensions. Instead of trying Safe Mode right away, click their toolbar buttons to see whether you can make a temporary or permanent exception. I don't know about this one service in particular, but it's something you may need to get used to checking until you know your content blockers' behaviors inside out.
