After a reinstallation of firefox (ubuntu), I still have my bookmarks and logins saved in the old firefox folder, but i can neither decrypt nor import

I had to uninstall and reinstall firefox on my computer, because for some reason it wasn't online, while every other app was. After I tried everything else, i uninstalled and reinstalled again and after a restart of the computer it was all good. except my passwords and bookmarks are still in my filesystem, but don't show up. I have tried importing it back, but the preferences don't have an import option and i didn't find any plugins either for it. Copypasting to the new account "somethingsomething.default" folder, the json file with key3.db didn't make a difference either.

any tips on how to solve this problem? i am honestly lost

You need logins.json and key4.db (i.e. key4.db for the key file) in current Firefox releases. If you only have a key3.db key file then make sure to remove an existing key4.db in the target folder.

What does the DNS lookup tool on the about:networking page report?

Did you check for problems with IPv6?

what do you mean by DNS lookup tool? or IPv6? to clarify: firefox works now online. I copied key3.db and login.json. i had also a key4.db in the original one, that i copied as well. maybe i shouldn't have? do i need to restart my computer to see changes? I also have a software called keepass but i would need some plugin I read to import .json files and I have no clue how to do that, also I don't have access to the server to make changes, where this keepass is stored...

If the old profile folder is in the same directory as the new one, and if Firefox for Ubuntu has a profiles.ini file in the parent of the profiles directory, you might be able to edit the profiles.ini file to use the old folder.

For example, my profiles.ini file got hosed. I have no idea how. I was getting an error starting Firefox saying my profile could not load. The contents of profiles.ini was:

'[Profile0] Name=default IsRelative=1 Path=Profiles/uiaqaxwu.default Default=1

[General] StartWithLastProfile=1 Version=2

[Install2656FF1E876E9973] IsRelative=1 Path=Profiles/kj55acoj.default-release'

The profile I needed is the first one. To get the old one back, I moved profiles.ini to my desktop. Then, Firefox started and created a new profiles.ini file. I really don't know how it works, but I moved the profile block corresponding to my old profile from the old file to the bottom of the new profiles.ini file, changed the heading to Profile1, since there was a new Profile 0. When I restarted Firefox with this as the profiles.ini file, everything was back to normal.

[Profile0] Name=default-release IsRelative=1 Path=Profiles/kj55acoj.default-release

[General] StartWithLastProfile=1 Version=2

[Install2656FF1E876E9973] Default=Profiles/uiaqaxwu.default

[Profile1] Name=default IsRelative=1 Path=Profiles/uiaqaxwu.default Default=1

If I get a better idea of what is going on, i will update this answer.
