I have an old laptop that I exported all my emails to a file with the extension of .eml. I went to my Thunderbird and tried to import these emails but I get to a part that offers me what type to import and it does not offer .eml. How do I add that..I have tried to read here and it says I have to allow the extension in options/addons..but there is not a list to add that extension. What am I missing?

Chosen solution

Select all the messages in the Sent folder (Ctrl+A), then Ctrl+S to save them as eml files. On the other computer, create a subfolder of Local Folders named e.g. SentOld, select it, Tools/ImportExportTools/Import messages or Import all messages from a directory.

Further Infor is Download “ Import/Export Tools” from Firefox Thunderbird.

Open Thunderbird (TB )not Firefox-Tools>Add-Ons and top right search for “Import” and hit enter.

In the results you will see the following listed as “ImportExportTools” I clicked the +Add to Thunderbird Somehow I activated it. Then I did go to the created folder in Local section and added all the emails in my saved .eml folder -Great! These were all the inbox messages I exported..what happens to the messages in the Sent folder..how do I export them? .

When I export it looks like it will save the messages under the same name as it did for the inbox messages..can I change that so they do not mix or overwrite? Also, on the authors page for this Import tool add on it says that due to Thunderbird policies tht version 60 will be his last..does this mean this function will no longer work or be supported by Thunderbird for .eml imports? Kind of confusing for the layperson

When you Ctrl+S a selection of messages, you are prompted to set the target folder. The default target is the last folder set, so if you want to keep the next folder separate, choose a different one.

The IET add-on or its functions may be updated for the next release of TB, likely not before the end of this year, but there is no guarantee. You can still import eml files in TB without an add-on by dragging from an Explorer folder and dropping on a subfolder of Local Folders in TB.

I am struggling with importing email from my old computer (Windows Live Mail) to my new computer (TB). I have managed to get the eml files exported and to the new computer on a flashdrive. In Explorer I have dragged them from the flashdrive to subfolders I created in Local Folders in TB. I can click on the eml files in Explorer and they open in TB. BUT the emails do not show up in the TB app. There it looks as though the folders are empty. How do I fix this?

I have WLM installed on the same W10 computer as TB, so I dragged some eml files from the WLM folder and dropped them onto a subfolder of Local Folders. All (6) messages appear complete in TB, so I can't explain your result. If you tried this with a large number of eml files, it's possible it takes a while for TB to index them; right-click the folder, Properties, Repair Folder, to re-index. Perhaps try the instructions given above for the ImportExportTools NG add-on, compatible with TB 68.

Thanks for your comments and guess about the cause. It wasn't a large number of files (150 max) and it's been all day and they still haven't shown up, so I don't think it's indexing. I tried the Repair Folder command -- no difference. But I did not know there was a new version of ImportExportTools add-on. I will go try that. Thanks!
