Bare-metal install - which files are critical to back-up to get back to where I was?

Posted

I back-up my files off-site daily and I've noticed quite a few unknown type files such as "https+++" among others. Some of these are quite large adding to the back-up time and I'm sure most of them are not needed.

So, my question is: If my computer was damaged beyond repair or stolen, which files/folders would I need to get me back to the last time I used Firefox?

I'm still using Firefox v. 55.0.3 as the later updates do not allow me to use the "Manage Tabs" add-on and that is the best feature by far for me. W/o that add-on I may as well be using Chrome.

I am still using v54 and am quite satisfied with my add-ons. As to possible issues as you describe, this is what to do:

  • Save a copy of the full installer for your version of Firefox.
  • Make sure to back up your profile just in case.
    I use Febe {web link}

These backups should be placed somewhere else on the hard drive.

That looks like the storage folder that is used by IndexedDB to store data locally. In current Firefox releases this folder also stores extension data (in storage/default). If you have extensions that use this storage then best would be to backup this folder as well. If you see storage data from website you no longer visit then you can remove this data via Firefox in Options/Preferences -> Privacy & Security under "Cookies and Site Data".

If you see extension data then you can use the about:debugging in Firefox to check to what extension an ID is linked.

Note Firefox uses two locations for the Firefox profile folder, so make sure to look in the correct location. You only need to backup files in the main (root) location.

Location used for the main profile that keeps your personal data (Root Directory on about:profiles).

  • C:\Users\<user>\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\<profile>\

Location used for the disk cache and other temporary files (Local Directory on about:profiles).

  • C:\Users\<user>\AppData\Local\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\<profile>\
