Opening attachment generated dreaded "white bar" at top of screen

Opening SOME attachments causes the white bar to appear, eating the menu bar and a bit below it. This is not consistent, but occurred today with a Word document.

This does NOT occur when sending attachments; only when opening.

All the menus are selected; Hardware acceleration is off; FF is not in "compatibility mode."

What else should I do?
