I'm running into a frequent problem. After using firefox for an amount of time, my bookmarks and history become "frozen".

The bookmark become kind of "read-only", I can't add, remove, or move any bookmarks at all.

As for history, pressing Ctrl-H still shows the links I visited, but all sites I visited after firefox "freezing" disappears once I restart the browser. All visited links don't change color to deep blue either.

As a result, I need to restart Firefox frequently. What is going on?

I just encountered the problem again. Here's the places maintenance.

In addition, when I try to quit firefox after it "freezes", the crash reporter pops up and prompts me to send the report to mozilla.

Any and every time the browser crashes, please send in the reports. The only way they can fix problems is if they know about them.

As to the maintenance report, some other program seems to be causing a problem by accessing the file.

This is what I want you to do. Start Firefox in Safe Mode {web link}

A small dialog should appear. Click Start In Safe Mode (not Refresh). Is the problem still there?

While still in Safe Mode,

We will now create a backup of your bookmarks. Open the Bookmarks Manager; Press the Alt or F10 key to bring up the toolbar, and select Bookmarks. Hot key is <Control> (Mac=<Command>) <Shift> B.

Once the window is open, at the top of the page, press the button labeled Import and Backup. Select Export Bookmarks To HTML, and follow the prompts and save it to a HTML file. Copy the file to another computer/profile. Repeat the instructions above, BUT select Import Bookmarks From HTML.

The information is too long, and I am unable to reply with more than 10,000 characters, so I have put the system information in pastebin.

Update Dropbox. If the problem continues, disable it.

Have you tried Firefox Safe Mode?

Have you set Firefox to clear history? This has been causing problems.

I have quite a few reports from about:crashes:

I was not aware that Dropbox was running, I couldn't find any instance of it in the notifications area, nor task manager. I have just uninstalled Dropbox, and I will continue to use firefox to see if the problem persists.

I have not set firefox to clear history, it is on "remember history" right now.

Many of the reports are too old to be useful.

more options

I am testing with safe mode now, but it may take a day or two for the problem to appear.

more options

It's been a few days, and it seems that the problem does not occur in safe mode anymore, could be due to uninstalling Dropbox. I'll switch back to regular Firefox to see if the problem remains

more options

The problem is partly unsolved still. Bookmarking seems to work now, but history still freezes after a certain point. Upon quitting Firefox, there is no crash dialogue, so I can't report the issue. I will verify integrity once I encounter the problem again.

I just encountered the problem again. I have been keeping an eye on the history tab. While my visits are recorded on the history tab, Firefox doesn't act like I visited these sites at all. Visited links remain light blue, pages I visited do not get suggested while typing on the address bar. Here's the places maintenance.

I still haven't closed Firefox yet, do tell me what I can do to provide more technical information.

Nevermind, closed firefox. Crash report: bp-fd2984fa-ce7f-45fb-9f15-b1de50190401

I searched for "handle or dll substring" with process explorer, and firefox was the only process using the places.sqlite file. Not sure if this is useful information.
