Since a recent firefox update gmail is not remembering my username for my email account. I have to input my details each time, rather than just entering the password. By default I have 'Delete cookies and site data when Firefox is closed' selected. Under 'exceptions' I have added 'https://mail.google.com' & 'https://accounts.google.com'. This combination has worked for years until the past few weeks. Any ideas?

The exceptions says this:

Logins for the following sites will not be saved.

Thanks for your reply. What I meant to say was under 'Manage Permissions' in the 'exceptions' list I have added those two url's and set them to 'allow', so the relevant cookies/site data doesn't get deleted.

I have my settings to the clear cookies as you did but my logins are saved when reopening the same page. I think you should uncheck close and open again and recheck the boxes and see if that doesn't change. My exception has nothing in it and it works just fine for login back to the page without re-entering the info.

You could try a broader exception to see whether it makes any difference:

https://google.com

If that also doesn't help, I wonder whether some other setting, feature, add-on, or external cleaner is removing the cookies?

You shouldn't use "Clear history when Firefox closes" to clear cookies and Site Preferences if you want to keep cookies for websites to remember you. Using that method clear all cookies and do not respect exceptions.

You will have to let the cookies expire when Firefox is closed to make them session cookies instead of using "Clear history when Firefox closes" to clear the cookies.

  • Options/Preferences -> Privacy & Security
    Cookies: "Delete cookies and site data when Firefox is closed"

You can create an Allow exception to keep specific cookies.

Hi, I think you misread. I never said I have 'Clear history when Firefox closes' enabled. I said I have 'Delete cookies and site data when Firefox is closed' enabled and I have added two gmail url's in the 'Manage Permissions' list to 'allow' status. By the way it's not like I just started using Firefox yesterday, it's been my go-to browser for 11 years now. I never changed any settings at all, it simply stopped working with a recent update. Apparently I'm not the only one either since a colleague of mine has the exact same issue using Firefox on their macbook when trying to login into gmail. For some reason the cookies for gmail are now no longer being saved. Other sites seem fine.

These two things are not mutually exclusive; Firefox will delete all these cookies. You can't exclude FF from deleting certain cookies when you close, it either deletes all of them or none of them.

Hmm, the wording changed on the Options/Preferences page change (see screenshot comparison), but the same underlying setting (network.cookie.lifetimePolicy) is affected.

Has the meaning of that setting changed, or is it being handled differently than it was before? I think we need more observations because I am not getting consistent results (i.e., some sites require login, for others the cookie works normally).

Yes I noticed this as well. It is with this recent update (64-65) that both the wording and behavior changed. Example: gmail no longer remembers logins with the above settings but hotmail remembers fine. Im guessing cookies are being handled differently now.

I haven't had to log into gMail for months. Same for the AVSforum.com site.
