Can't delete folders, message 'Unable to connect to your IMAP server, you may have exceeded the maximum' Please advise. Email is sluggish at best

Having problems deleting folders and emptying Trash. Message errors that continuously show are 'unable to connect to your IMAP server, you may have already exceeded the maximum...' or 'the current command did not suceed'. Somebody converted my 3 email accounts on Thunderbird from POP to IMAP, now nothing works as well as it did previously, plus I seemed to have a lost a lot of emails saved in folders during conversion. Please help or advise. Paul
