According to the Task Manager, when FF tries to start it stops booting at around 9,700-9,800K. This is pretty consistent. Right now it is at 9,764K. Last time I tried there was another FF file that went up to 34,XXXK. This time not.

I tried doing a System Restore but it did not complete because some of the files could not be updated.

Found an exe files for my version, installed that, still the same problem. I thought that maybe the exe file was damaged, but the new one does exactly the same thing.

So many help screens say go to the Menu but that is not possible when it won't even boot up!

I did not install any software or do anything to the computer before this. To make matters worse, somehow internet connection got disconnect. With much googling, found how to fix that.

I have saved my profile folder to the desktop because I cannot afford to lose all my bookmarks, etc.

Now what?

I am asking this question on a different computer as the laptop is too much of a pain to type on with that pad in the front. Besides, without FF..... So no automated info gathering will help you.

I tried opening Opera which I have on that laptop and it won't even start at all! Chrome does, that's how I downloaded a new exe file.

Chosen solution

Boot the computer in Windows Safe mode with network support to see if that has effect in case security software is causing problems.

You can find the full version of the current Firefox release (63.0.3) in all languages and all operating systems here:

As I said, pay no attention to the "details" provided as that is a different machine entirely!

Thanks for the response.

Just before you responded I had tried booting FF in safe mode via command line and also by holding down the shift key. Same results for both.

I have Avast for security software. Perhaps they made an "update" which stops it. I'll check that first, then do Windows Safe Mode and report back.

YAY! Problem solved! Here's how:

Thought maybe it was malware. Ran Malwarebytes. Clean.

Tried to open Avast UI, could not. (earlier had tried to open Opera, could not either)

Went to Avast support section, article said to go to services.msc, Remote Desktop Services. It was set to Manual. Article said to change it to Automatic, and if it stopped, hit Start, then reboot.

Did all that, it works!

During the process I finally remembered what had happened just before the whole problem started with FF. I had a black screen, panicked, and found it was hung up while shutting down, found out when starting to apply the "fix" to it. Held the button down, it shut off completely then but apparently it had changed the Services setting. Grrr.... anyway, now it is fixed, and thank you.

PS: I KNEW it had to be something simple, like a setting was wrong. A friend had suggested using a Recovery Disk and doing a complete factory reset. I said that's like burning down the house because the carpet is dirty!
