PC Closes down when FireFox is clicked

Posted

Hi Everyone,

I currently have what we all hate -- an intermittent problem.

Occasionally, (variable between 6 times per day or once per week/fortnight) when my machine has been switched on for one to ten hours, and often when it has not been active for a period of time (although background tasks such as backup can be running) -- as I take the mouse and (a) click to start FF from cold, (b) click to start a Toolbar item in an active FF, or even (c) click to minimise FF in readiness to start a different programme -- the screen goes black/blank and the system closes down into restart (Start Windows Normally option). The restart is usually trouble-free and the "new session" might then go on for hours/days without similar crashes.

There is never any visible/audible warning, neither do I believe there is any "commonality" in events leading up to the crash.

My system is based on an Intel i5-6600 Quad pro., has 32GB RAM., Asus-H-170M Plus Motherboard., Win 7 Ultimate 64 bit (SP1)., C:\ is Samsung EVO SSD 512GB and there are seven other HDD's providing a potential capacity of 30TB -- no drive has less than 50% Free Space available.

FF is Quantum, version 63.0.3(64bit) AV and Firewall is G Data Internet Security version 25.5.1.21.

I'd appreciate hearing from anyone who has had similar experiences or, better still, solutions.

Thanks,

Ian

Start Firefox in Safe Mode {web link} by holding down the <Shift> (Mac=Options) key, and then starting Firefox.

A small dialog should appear. Click Start In Safe Mode (not Refresh). Is the problem still there?

Start your Computer in safe mode with network support. Then start Firefox. Try Secure websites. Is the problem still there?

Hi FredMcD, I thank you for the response, although I'm not sure how starting in Safe Mode is going to help identify a problem which might not happen for weeks into the future. It is a fault I cannot create. Thanks anyway, Ian

I see. You should also ask for help here; https://support.microsoft.com http://answers.microsoft.com/en-US/windows/forum/windows_10

Hi FredMcD, It is, as stated in the question, an occurrence which seems very closely associated/interlinked with FF as opposed to any Microsoft product, so recourse to MS Support would probably result in their referring me back to here. Similarly, as it is Win7 I am using, I doubt the Win10 Forum would be very welcoming either. Ian

There is nothing about Firefox that should be able to shut down the computer.

Post your question anyway.

You may have ad/mal-ware. Further information can be found in this article; https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/troubleshoot-firefox-issues-caused-malware?cache=no

Run most or all of the listed malware scanners. Each works differently. If one program misses something, another may pick it up.

Hi FredMcD, I have both Malwarebytes and Super-Anti installed and active. (No conflicts) I would never permit anything from Kaspersky, Norton or McAffee onto my computer, which eliminates the TDSSKiller recommendation. Have run both MS Safety Scan and ADW Clean - images of the log files are attached. Ian

I will say a shutdown of the pc just by closing a browser is a O/S issue of something got corrupted in the sys files and that should be directed to Windows support about the problem. A Browser by itself doesn't have the option to shutdown the computer. That is controlled by Windows O/S.
