How to use Leak Gauge?

Firefox seems to be leaking a huge amount of memory on a site I'm working on. So I'm trying to use the Leak-Hunting tools found here: https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Mozilla/Performance/Leak-hunting_strategies_and_tips

Especially this one: https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Mozilla/Performance/Leak_Gauge

But I can't get it working. I have added the lines to my .bash_profile and started firefox but no log file is generated. That page is far from helpful if you are new to the tools. I'm on a Mac and adding those lines as environment variables don't work.

Could someone share a more step by step guide how to get this working?
