Certain file types refuse to download

In the last week, certain files have refused to start downloading. At first I thought it was just one computer, but it seems my work PC is also affected.

It seems to mainly affect video files, or more complicated files. Trying to download a .webm, .mp4, .gif, .zip, .rar, or .exe does not work. Downloading .jpg, .png, or .txt all work fine.

I am able to get all the files in my downloads list to download by completely quitting out of Firefox, and then opening it again. Firefox sees all the files in my download queue and saves them, no problem.

Could this be some side-effect of a recent Windows/Firefox update (maybe User Account Control getting stricter?) Any ideas to help me get to the bottom of this would be greatly appreciated.

(Before you ask, yes, I have gone through the "I can't download files" steps in the FAQ, all my settings are exactly the same as they were a week ago, when I could download fine)

I see you have a download manager: MyJDownloader Is the problem with it or with Firefox itself?

Make sure you are not blocking content.

Start Firefox in Safe Mode {web link} by holding down the <Shift> (Mac=Options) key, and then starting Firefox.

A small dialog should appear. Click Start In Safe Mode (not Refresh). Is the problem still there?

One issue that seems more common lately is Firefox's Tracking Protection feature. When it is blocking content in a page, a shield icon will appear at the left end of the address bar next to the padlock icon. This article has more info on managing this feature: Tracking Protection {web link}
