I just had to donate in order to download Thunderbird. Have I been "had" and someone has stolen my identity???

I was quite surprised to be confronted with an impassable screen unless I donated to The Cause. Now I'm wondering if it was all fake and my identity has been compromised??

If you downloaded the Thunderbird installer from https://www.thunderbird.net/ you do get a prompt to donate. However, this is not an impassable screen, i.e. you're not forced to donate.

Note the banner at the top of the donate page: "Your download should have begun automatically. If it didn’t work, try downloading again here."

Where did you download Thunderbird from?
