I am trying to set up a new e-mail address and Thunderbird times out straight away. Uninstalled and re-installed, it does not have the full menu.

I seem to have created a "ghost" on Thunderbird. The reinstall remembered by Outgoing settings. However there are no facilities to input my incoming settings. Previous problem was that I had to manually configure which was done correctly, However Thunderbird did not recognize the settings. There was also a conflict with AVG who said the connection was unknown.

Hope someone out there has some answers to this.

PlusNet comes with McAfee Protection

McAfee has been problematic in connection with Thunderbird for a long time. It possibly explains some of the problems you have. It is recommended to get rid of McAfee.

Try to start Windows in safe mode with networking enabled. - Win10 https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/12376/windows-10-start-your-pc-in-safe-mode

Start Thunderbird and try again to set up your account.

If an account has already been created make sure not to use the same account name for the new account.

It would only take me as far as the sign-in screen and no further. No options page was displayed.

You'd need to be more specific about what you did. Note, only you can see what's going on on your screen.

Uninstalled Thunderbird, booted down, booted up and reinstalled Thunderbird.

You're wasting your time. Profile files are stored separately from the Thunderbird program files. The program files are static and do not change (except when you upgrade the Thunderbird application version). Because we store profile and program files separately, you can uninstall Thunderbird without losing your messages and settings, and if something goes wrong with a Thunderbird update your information will still be available. It also means that you don't have to reinstall Thunderbird in order to delete your information or troubleshoot a problem.

Please post your Troubleshooting Information. At the top right of the Thunderbird window, click the menu button , then select Help > Troubleshooting Information. Press the "Copy text to clipboard button" and paste the information into your reply.

I don't understand your point. If you enter the port numbers manually, then this isn't the automatic setup. Beyond that, what are the correct port numbers? Please post the server settings as per your email provider's instructions.

At the top right of the Thunderbird window, click the menu button > Options > Account Settings

You should ask in a Windows forum for help about Windows safe mode.

Port 25 and SSL don't match. As said before, use the settings as per your email provider's instructions. There is no point trying arbitrary combinations of port number and connection security in Thunderbird server settings.

I have the e-mail provider settings and have used the correct ones. Thank you for pointing out the port 25 and SSL/TLS do not match. I now have a new message from Thunderbird that says this is a warning that the incoming and outgoing setting do not use encryption. It could use them but advises me to contact my administrator as they are improper connections.

I have managed to automatically set up the same settings on a small laptop. At first it said no and I closed the lid. Half an hour later I opened the lid and it had worked.

I presume that is what you mean by e-mail provider. Plusnet is a good provider and indeed one that I have used in the past. The warning came from Thunderbird, who seem to be unable to provide me with a clear answer to the problem that I have encountered.

I am not a computer technologist. However I have been using computers for years. Perhaps you might be able to explain how I recover my account?
