Error while moving POP email to IMAP Gmail in Thunderbird Application

We switched from a locally maintained POP email account to a corporate Gmail IMAP email account. The old POP server is offline but all my older messages are saved locally on my pc and still show up in the old account in Thunderbird. It seems the only way to move these messages to the Gmail account is to drag and drop from the old email account into a new folder in the gmail account all withing Thunderbird. I've been getting timeout errors when connecting to IMAP.Gmail or Google and it looks like it hangs up when Thunderbird looks to be logging into gmail in the middle of the move.

Any suggestions as to how to prevent the connection from timing out or to make Thunderbird stay logged into Gmail. It will take forever to move all my old email to gmail 200 messages at a time.
