Firefox with windows 7 frequently times out on one particular secure site.

Frequently but not always the browser hangs with a timed out message when accessing Allied Trust, a financial site. This also happens with Internet Explorer. Other times it works fine.

I seldom have problems on other sites including secure ones.

Allied Trust say it is not a problem at their end. I did not believe this until I tried (only once) using an Android tablet connected over the same modem/router. This was a complete success.

I appreciate this looks more like a Windows problem than Firefox but I would value any advice on how to progress.

Does other Browser do the same behavior as well? Timing out isn't usually a site that does it for security to prevent unauthorized access. Financial systems do that to prevent unsecure access.

The problem has happened on my desktop PC running Windows 7 using both Internet Explorer and Firefox. It has happened many times over many weeks, even at times of the day or weekend when I might expect traffic to be light on the hosts.

When I tried it mid morning on a tablet it worked without any problem.

HI, please go to search and type : cmd.exe when you see it in the list please Right Click and Run as Administrator.

Type, Copy/Paste sfc /scannow then Enter. ( sfc<space>/scannow )

Reboot when it finishes. Test to see if that makes any difference. The command repairs the registry and replaces corrupted files from files stored in the repository (local files). Test.

Do this 1st please : SAFE MODE

In Firefox Safe mode these changes are effective:

  • all extensions are disabled (about:addons)
  • default theme is used (no persona)
  • userChrome.css and userContent.css are ignored (chrome folder)
  • default toolbar layout is used (file: localstore-safe.rdf)
  • Javascript JIT compilers are disabled (prefs: javascript.options.*jit)
  • hardware acceleration is disabled (Options > Advanced > General)
  • plugins are not affected
  • preferences are not affected

TEST''''is issue still there ?

Note : There is security software like Avast/AVG, Kaspersky, BitDefender and ESET, Mcafee that can cause issues if you are using any of the above see their Community forum for new setting information / Update 1st.

Thank you for your thoughts.

I have tried Firefox in safe mode but have still had time-outs. I have also tried on my tablet a further two times without problem.

This is the only web site that I know frequently causes this problem.

In summary: since the tablet works OK (100% sucess on three tries) this suggests the web site, modem and ADSL service are OK. Since the fault happens frequently, but not always, with both IE and Firefox my question is what can cause a browser to respond so sluggishly that a site times-out? Taskmanager confirms that when this occurs there are no other applications running and the CPU load is either 0% or 1%.
