I have Win-7 Pro and stopped using IE long, long ago. I still have IE 10, but haven't opened it in years. While IE has some integration into Windows, you can use FF or any other browser and just open up 'Windows Update' as needed (if you have set WU only to notify and not auto-download).

You don't have to run or open IE to do Windows Updates.

My Avast Anti-Virus still grabs the Flash Plug-in for IE, so IE Flash is always updated, without ever opening and running IE.

Windows Updates happen through a totally separate program (the windows update program), which updates regardless of what browser you use.

You can't uninstall IE from Windows, as it is critical to the functioning of Windows, but you can use Firefox for all your web browsing. Make Firefox your default browser
