Having re-installed Thunderbird after problem caused by microsoft update, my incoming emails vanish from my in box after I've opened them

After the latest Windows 10 update loaded on my laptop, I found that I couldn't access my Thunderbird email accounts. I think that the message was "Can't load XPCOM". An internet search suggested that I re-install Thunderbird, which I did, and it seemed to be OK. However, a couple of days after getting it all up and running again, when I looked at my incoming emails this morning, those that I previously read had all disappeared. The three new emails that I opened and read also disappeared after I'd read them. Please tell my how I can stop this happening in the future.

Just a guess.

View menu > messages > all. I think you have somehow managed to set it to unread.

Hi Matt, thanks for your suggestion, but although I was wondering if there is an option button somewhere that would do as you say, I cannot find the "view menu>messages>all" Where is it please?

Thanks, Jon

try clicking the menu button... that three line thing on the right of the toolbar.

Sorry Matt, that doesn't generate the "Menu>Messages>All" either. In case it's relevant, my wife and I each have personal email addresses @gmx.com, and business email addresses @uwclub.net. Only the @gmx.com emails self delete after being read, the @uwclub.net remain until we decide to delete them.
