It made no difference. That surprised me; I thought it would work. And the problem actually continued as worse, with gmail just crashing every time even without a search.
Then I bit the bullet and reinstalled windows. Of course it's fine now. But I do have to reinstall everything. Anyway, I combined that with a new SSD hard drive. So at least I can pretend some good came out if.
Could it have been a virus legacy? A hard disk problem? Who knows? Not me.

I'm doing a clean install of windows (sigh). So that makes further advice moot. Presumably, this problem won't continue with windows reinstalled. That said, I appreciate your time and help. Thank you.

Start your Computer in safe mode with network support. Then start Firefox.
Try Safe websites. Is the problem still there?

I installed malwarebytes just a few hours ago to help with this problem. So it's updated. The problem happened before I installed and continues after I installed it and ran it (and did quarantine a bunch of stuff). I can and will disable it. But I suspect it won't matter.
