NewTab focus is not at search box - aboutHome.autoFocus does not exist FF59
FF 59.0.2 NewTab does open the desired webpage - such as Google - but the focus is at the address bar. Many folks prefer this but for millions of us this wastes a lot of time, and requires interaction to get to the (example: Google) 'Search Box' rather than the address bar. Yes one could "just use the address bar" but is, for many, simply illogical and downright 'jarring'. A 25 Feb, 2018 suggestion on mSupport suggests setting "browser.newtabpage.activity-stream.aboutHome.autoFocus" to 'true' Problem is that no such item exists - only "browser.newtabpage.activity-stream.aboutHome.enabled" actually exists.
