How can I prevent the backspace key from deleting the previous email address?

I think I am going nuts. Since my last Thunderbird update (52.6.0 on Windows 7), if I make a typing error when entering email addresses and I hold the backspace key down, it deletes each character in that email address but then JUMPS TO THE PREVIOUS EMAIL ADDRESS FIELD AND STARTS DELETING THAT, TOO.

I have been using Thunderbird for decades and do not remember the backspace key behaving like this. It would delete the email address line I was working on and stop at the beginning of the current field. Is this new? Can I fix it?

Thanks, Daniel
