I get 200-300 old emails at one time in my email-this happened 3 times in 3 weeks
In the last few weeks I have opened my email inbox to find 177 old emails (dated from Feb.) A week later there were almost 300 old emails...the same ones......and today another 300 same old emails all in my inbox. I hope you can help me figure this out, and please keep in mind I am NOT a computer savvy person at all.
I would like to thank all of you who volunteer to keep Thunderbird running. So many people have tried to convince me to ditch t-Bird but I love it too much to do that. To me, it is the best and easiest to use.

In order for us to better investigate this issue you need to add a little more non-personal information.
Please add the troubleshooting information to your post. To find the Troubleshooting information:
- Open Help (or click on three-line-icon and select Help).
- Choose Troubleshooting Information.
- Clear the check box Include account names.
- Use the button Copy to clipboard to select all.
- Paste this into your reply to this post.
Please post back with this information and any other questions you might have.
I know how to copy and paste. When I click on 'copy to clipboard' there is no evidence that I made anything happen. Does that automatically copy and I don't know it? If not, how much of the screen do I copy and I can paste it here...but it is very long.....The subjects are: Application basics, Mail & New accounts, Crash reports last 3 days, Extensions, Graphics, Media, Import Modified preferences....
Using the button makes a better job of it. Regular copy and paste messes up the formatting. And, please, not a screenshot.
What we're after here are the account settings, and maybe your extensions. Anything after those can be ignored.
I'm very sorry, but I do not understand. where are the account settings? I do not see them listed in the list I sent you. Like I said, I am not a computer person. I really appreciate your help with this, but I am not understanding. I definitely would not do a screen shot because I have no clue how. I think I understand I should highlight something and then click 'copy to clipboard' but don't know what the account settings are on the screen that has everything I listed in my first reply to you. Is it called something else? I am so sorry...I wish I had you on the phone....LOL....talking me through it would be so much easier and faster.........
Sorry, where is the list you claim to have sent? How was it sent? I haven't given you an email address to use.
If I follow the instructions, I get this:

See? "Mail and News Accounts".
I asked you to do this because I thought it would be easier than asking if the account in question uses POP or IMAP. Then I'd be asking more about ISP, your add-ons, your antivirus. Much of that comes with the profile listing.
Just click the button. It saves the text to the clipboard. You don't need to select anything. Then paste and trim. Postings to this forum have a limit on character count, so it won't accept the whole list anyway. We don't need to see the parts about printers and fonts.
I suspect you're using POP.
POP occasionally burps and downloads old messages.
Thunderbird has a file ("popstate.dat") which remembers which messages it has already downloaded. If this file is damaged or removed, it may well just download everything all over again.
POP was designed to be used in a specific way:
- messages arrive at the server
- you run your email program and download those messages
- the downloaded messages are removed from the server
If you have old messages on the server, and you're using POP, then you must have set it to "leave a copy on the server". This is a kludge, doesn't always work well and can lead to the situation you describe.
If you are using CCleaner or other similar tools, they may be removing the popstate.dat file.
On the other hand, if your account uses IMAP, then it's all a bit more mysterious and interesting.
OMG! Now I am totally and utterly confused. This makes no sense to me at all. I may have to find someone to come over here and translate everything you wrote because it makes no sense to me. Perhaps in the next few days I can get someone here. Once a month I have a young kid come over who deals with issues for me. He was here Saturday but I did not really pursue this problem with him. Now with your replies for him to refer to, he will understand and be able to do something!! Hopefully he will be free next Saturday afternoon. I'll just have to pay him again to come read your posts and help figure it out. I am
I am having another problem lately too........should I post it as a new post and start over? If not, here is the problem. I have two verizon email addresses and two gmail. This happens with verizon only. When I hit 'send' to send or reply to an email, it will not be delivered and I get a popup that says" "The message could not be send because the connection to Outgoing server (SMTP) smtp.verizon.net timed out. Try again.
Also, I don't think I sent you any list......

…in the list I sent you…
OK Zenos, I think my brain has shut down. I am totally lost here. I am going to have to get my friend over here to make sense of your posts. Forgive me, but I have no idea when he can come back. I guess we have to put this on hold either until my brain functions or he comes over.
When I wrote 'the list I sent you' I meant this from the email: "The subjects are: Application basics, Mail & New accounts, Crash reports last 3 days, Extensions, Graphics, Media, Import Modified preferences...." that was the list I was referring to....
Zenos.....is there any chance you will be around Saturday at 2PM ET? My computer friend will be coming over and just in case he needs the wizard, you, he can message you. The mass email issue has not happened since the day I contacted you. But it does not happen every day. Sometimes several days off and then it happens again. Thanks again for your knowledge, and sorry I am not able to understand. Thankful for the guy coming over who is very wise with this stuff. Hopefully you will be there Sat in case we need you.

Which of your accounts are/were affected by the old email messages problem?
All of your accounts are pop, which tends to be somewhat prone to repeated downloads.
I am intrigued by why or how you have managed to get pop accounts that use servers labelled "imap", and why you have renamed the Local Folders account.
I did advise you to "Clear the check box Include account names" - you might want to edit your posting and edit out your email addresses.
OK....my computer friend was here and he was the one who sent you the last message. He left a while ago. He asked me to copy and paste your reply to him and he would try to figure it out. One other possibility might be that Verizon, as of a year ago, turned over all email service to AOL. So there is a slight possibility it is their problem. Anyway, I am going to send my friend your message and take it from there. He will be back when we have something to work with. It happened again yesterday and I got 247 emails dated back from 3/6/18. So, for now all I can do is give him your reply. I am totally clueless when it comes to this stuff. I thank you for your time, honestly, and I apologize that I cannot get back to you right away.
Can you not tell me which of your accounts are doing this?
I have two verizon.com (through AOL) and only my main email, moremuscle@verizon.net is the problem. The other verizon email does not have the problem. I went into AOL and the seem to delete frequently because I have not gone in there in almost a year and there were only 250 emails showing in my inbox. I was expecting thousands. I'll see if those end up coming back to me !!!
Do you have a program called 'CCLeaner' on your computer? Or perhaps 'KCleaner' or 'Bleachbit' ?
A program that runs to cleanup eg: temporary files.
Today I got 600 emails this afternoon. I do compact my trash almost daily. This is getting ridiculous. I see someone else is suffering with this problem too......I keep the inbox empty now so that if I get a mass influx of emails I can just delete them all at once. But it should not have to be this way....At least once, twice or three times a week this happens....I can go for three days without it happening and then....boom....
Modified
re : moremuscle@verizon.net account
As this is a POP mail account, please provide some additional info. Do you keep messages on the server? Find the info here...
- Right click on moremuscle@verizon.net mail account in Folder Pane and select 'Settings'
- Select 'Server Settings'
- Is this selected: 'Leave messages on server' ?
- Is this selected 'Until I delete them' ?
- Suggest you select those options.
- Click on 'OK'
re :I do compact my 'trash' almost daily. Emails are deleted from the 'Inbox' folder, so this is the folder that has all the 'marked as deleted' emails. Compacting will remove traces of 'marked as deleted' emails. Q: Do you compact the 'Inbox' folder after deleting emails? If no:
- Move all good emails to another folder.
- Delete all emails you want to delete.
when 'Inbox' is empty....
- Right click on 'Inbox' folder and select 'Compact folder'.
