How can I stop FF from showing the wrong folder to download to?

I want to download a number of files and save them all to the same location, changing the name of each file before downloading.

In Options/General I have set "[x] Always ask you where to save files"

But I have also set "[ ]Save files to" to the path I want and checked this box and saved a file once. This is a pain because I then have to open the target folder and change the name of the file there.

I then switch to "Always ask....", and this maneuver usually works at least once: the "where to save" query window opens with the desired folder selected, so I can copy the desired file name in and hit enter.

Unfortunately FF will always revert to trying to save to "c:\downloads" or a location I once used but have not for months. (I have searched my profile for this location, but it is not found).

I have also tried copying in the full path and file name, but that has no lasting effect - not even the next time.

Can anyone suggest what else I might try?

Thank you
