YouTube programs won't run after a Firefox 58.0 update on 1/23/2018. Symptoms: black screen with spinning circle that runs perpetually in the video window. No video. No audio. The timer stay at zero. Still-images can be seen by moving the cursor along scroll bar. Multiple videos were attempted and failed. The same videos will work with Microsoft Edge on the same computer. Previous Mozilla support forum articles from 8/20/2017 and 11/21/2017 regarding "YouTube" didn't fix the problem. The videos will play if "Restarted with Add-ons Disabled" is used, but not with a normal start. All extensions have been deleted and there are only two plug-ins (Open264 and Widevine) both of which are disabled. Friends report no problems with YouTube using Firefox 58.0. Does anyone have any additional diagnostic advice?

You can try to disable hardware acceleration in Firefox.

Close and restart Firefox after modifying the setting to make the change effective.

You can check if there is an update for your graphics display driver and check for hardware acceleration related issues.

In Firefox Safe mode these changes are effective:

  • hardware acceleration is disabled (Options/Preferences -> General -> Performance)
  • all extensions are disabled (about:addons)
  • default theme is used (no lightweight theme)
  • default toolbar layout is used
  • xulstore.json is ignored
  • userChrome.css and userContent.css are ignored (chrome folder in profile folder)
  • JavaScript JIT compilers are disabled
  • plugins are not affected
  • preferences are not affected

Thank you. The problem was hardware acceleration. I overlooked this investigation which was suggested in a previous post; lesson learned. Per the suggestions in the link “upgrade-graphics-drivers-use-hardware-acceleration”, scans by both Microsoft and Intel (Intel HD Graphics 3000 device) indicate the drivers are up to date. It looks like I’ll need to run with the HW acceleration disabled. The need to disable WebGL per the graphics-drivers link is unknown at this time. It was not necessary to disable WebGL to get YouTube and a couple of webinar graphics to work.
