Firefox profile cannot be loaded. It may be missing or inaccessible

Posted

I am getting the error: Profile Missing: Your Firefox profile cannot be loaded. It may be missing or inaccessible. I have followed the current instructions on the posts about: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1152265. I have made contact with apple.care who have assured me that the OS Mac High Sierra 10.13.2 is running fine & up-to-date. They are able to install Firefox & Run it & Profile Manager as root user, however when we try and redo the same steps as the article as local user the error persists. Apple.care have suggested I contact Mozilla for help. Can anyone please help? Thank you for your time & consideration.

Chosen solution

Make sure that the permissions and owner of the locations used by Firefox for the profile are correct.

Firefox uses two locations for the Firefox profile folder. Location used for the main profile that keeps your personal data (Root Directory on about:profiles).

  • ~/Library/Application Support/Firefox/Profiles/<profile>/

Location used for the disk cache and other temporary files (Local Directory on about:profiles).

  • ~/Library/Caches/Firefox/Profiles/

It turned out that I needed to: 1. Restore my original Firefox Installation Files inc Profiles directory & profiles.ini file using Time Machine 2. Temporarily give /Users/<username>/Library directory root access then use the cmd: /Applications/Firefox.app/Contents/MacOS/firefox-bin -P in Terminal to Open the Profile Manager 3. Locate the Profiles directory in /Users/<username>/Library/Profiles/ click done & Start Firefox 4. Remove the Root Access given to the give /Users/<username>/Library directory.

Thank you for: - you prompt reply in helping me resolve the situation, - the extra reference material regarding corrupt Apple User Accounts, Cheers, Dan Stachlewski
