I just did a clean reinstall of 57.0.2(64 bit). I downloaded and saved 57.0.2 onto a removable drive then uninstalled the present 57.0.2 ran "clean disc" twice deleting all the files including system files. I had saved my profile to the removable drive so I did a search for any file named mozilla or firefox and deleted them. then ran CCleaner to clean additional files and also used it to clean out my registry. I did a shut down and restart of my computer and then reinstalled 57.0.2 and put my profile back in. When I restarted Firefox I ended up with 4 firefox.exe's running and I'm pretty sure there should only be 3. I mostly use my computer to read the news. Going to MSN.com and opening a 2nd tab causes extreme memory usage. I also have minor problems with cbsnews.com and reuters.com with 2 tabs open. The memory increased but at a slower rate. Abcnews.go.com and nbcnews.com seem to work pretty good. Interesting thing is if I am on msn.com and switch to abcnews.go.com the memory usage barely goes down. If I do a "end process" in task manager the tab will crash. When I click on restart tab it goes back to msn.com. It seem like firefox isn't unloading the site after it is changed to a new site. I have also noticed that after you close a tab the firefox.exe doesn't always go away. I've pretty much been using open in a new window instead of new tab to solve that problem. I've gone through all the things I've read in support and have check marked "Prevent accessibility services" and dropped my "content process limit" to 2. Nothing has worked. I'm not a power user. I check my email, read the news, look at Craigs List and eBay, and watch an occasional You Tube if something isn't working on my car. That's it!! No games or social sites. So when is Mozilla going to get this problem fixed. It seems like a lot of people have it and many are switching away from firefox. I don't think that was the intent of Quantum.

Chosen solution

If people ask Firefox Volunteer Support we help with the issue. People need to ask.

4,3 7 it all depends on what's running, even extensions put those in to the Task Manager.

You do not have send info to Mozilla ticked within Firefox before posting so I have no info on your system Video Card Drivers or Extensions.

So then Please update Video Card Drivers :

Is hard to say as you have done everything that would have suggested : Prevent accessibility services and dropped content process limit to 2. You can go to 1 which is not using all cores, just 1 core. All this can be disabled also if need be.

Should check Task Manager for running programs that do not need to be running and set them up so do not run until you have actually clicked on the short cut to start it. Turn Off Services that do not need to run also until you click for the Program.

Also extra Programs running in the Taskbar go into those programs and see if Options/Settings allow you to stop them if not needed also.

Please try in Safe Mode :

In Firefox Safe mode these changes are effective:

  • all extensions are disabled (about:addons)
  • default theme is used (no persona)
  • userChrome.css and userContent.css are ignored (chrome folder)
  • default toolbar layout is used (file: localstore-safe.rdf)
  • Javascript JIT compilers are disabled (prefs: javascript.options.*jit)
  • hardware acceleration is disabled (Options > Advanced > General)
  • plugins are not affected
  • preferences are not affected

TEST

Create a new profile as a test to check if your current profile is causing the problem.

See "Creating a profile":

If the new profile works then you can transfer files from a previously used profile to the new profile, but be cautious not to copy corrupted files to avoid carrying over the problem

Under Options-Privacy & Security-Firefox Data Collection & Use I do have Allow Firefox to send technical....... & Allow Firefox to send crash reports checked. The only one that is not checked is the Run Studies one. Maybe nothing was sent because it was a new install. I dropped the content process limit to 1 and unchecked use hardware acceleration. Seemed to help when I opened MSN but as soon as I opened a second tab or window the memory and cpu would start going up. I don't have any addons or extensions installed. I am running the "light" default theme. I only have 3 plugins that must have been installed by Firefox. One is "OpenH264 Video Codec" always on, 2nd is "Widevine Content Decription" always on, and 3rd is "Shockwave Flash" ask to activate. I have never been asked to activate it. I had already checked Intel drivers and it said I was up to date. I don't see any programs running in Task Manager that don't need to be running. As I said, I am not a power user. I have a 147 GB hard drive with 103 GB free. Not very many programs on my computer. I did start Firefox in Safe Mode but it acted exactly the same as in Normal Mode. MSN was fine until I opened 2nd tab. It did start up with less firefox.exe's running. Funny thing is the memory usage doesn't go back down if I close the 2nd tab or window. I have to crash the remaining tab and restart it.

So, I have 2 profiles on my computer. Instead of setting up a second profile in Firefox under my profile I deleted the Firefox profile and ini file under the other Windows profile. I switched to it and started Firefox. It started up with 4 firefox.exe's. I brought up MSN and opened a total of 3 tabs. That gave me 6 firefox.exe's. Memory usage and cpu usage started jumping so I shut down 1 tab and 1 firefox.exe went away. I shut down the 2nd tab but it stayed showing 5 firefox.exe's. I manually shut down 2 of the firefox.exe's which got me down to 3 left. I switched to another site that I know doesn't use much memory but it didn't back off. I finally shut down Firefox and then restarted it. It started back up showing 5 firefox.exe's. I shut down and restarted Windows and when I restarted Firefox it was back to 4-exe's. So this new profile was working very similarly to my other one. On the new profile I looked at the settings but didn't mess with them. They were all set to the defaults. This is not my first go around trying to fix Firefox. You helped me before at: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1189677. I do apologize for getting upset and I realize you are a volunteer but I just don't have hours to spend trying to fix version 57. When I downloaded the complete install for 57.0.2 I also downloaded 52.5.2esr which I am going to switch to and see if it works. When the extended service runs out in a couple of months I will come back to 57 and see what's going on. In the mean time I will mark this as solved. Thanks for your help!!
