Why do I have to check for messages twice before they download

When I open thunderbird v 52.3.0 to download messages and input password nothing happens. When I click on get messages a 2nd time they do download. I am pretty sure I didnt have this problem prior to downloading new ver of thunderbird, any suggestions would be helpful,thanks
