writing mail, cannot open an image attachment to the mail

When writing a mail, I find that opening an attached picture image (eg, a screenshot of a crash message) helps in composing the text for the mail. Once, I could attach the image, and then rt click the attachments filename, open with media player, and OK, and the image would be displayed. I then composed the text around what is seen in the picture.

Now (several, possibly many versions of T'bird later) when I do this, I get to click the OK part of the open with media player process, the selection box disappears but it just goes into the ether somewhere. No screen presentation displayed while T'bird is open. But if I minimise T'bird, I can happily open the image I attached to the mail using the media player app on the PC. So it seems that the T'bird connection to media player is broken somehow.

I've lived with it for a while, but it's damn annoying. Is there a fix to restore the performance of T'bird to what it once was, or should I take it that this is the new normal?

PC OS - windows 7 home 64bit sp1 fully patched T'bird version 52.3.0 (32 bit version) Media player version 1206.0.7601.23517
