firefox crashes on iphone 6 after about 10 seconds

Posted

Have used Firefox for about a year on my iphone6 without a problem incl syncing with my other devices. Last week the app began to crash out after about 10 seconds before I could enter a url or go to a saved bookmark. Today I deleted the app and reinstalled and after about half a dozen successful browses the problem re-occurred and it is now effectively useless. Any ideas please. I do not want to defect to another browser as I find Firefox meets my needs well and the sync function is invaluable.

Hello again: Thanks for previous advice. There was loads of stuff in the data field and I could not work out which to send BUT yesterday I received a notification of a Firefox update on the iphone. I duly uploaded this and since then no problem whatsoever. I have used Firefox at least 20 times. So it looks like thats the answer - it would be interesting to know if the fault I had has been knowingly fixed in the update. Thanks for your help.

First a correction to my opening post. My iphone is an SE model ( not a 6 ). Sorry for the misinformation.

Since my last post I have loaded the latest version - IOS 10.3.3 and Firefox still crashes after a few seconds. Two days ago for no apparent reason (before I upgraded) Firefox did work as expected for maybe a couple of hours before reverting to this problem state. I did wonder if somehow the sync function was the cause - I sync bookmarks with my desktop and laptop. However I think this is unlikely because the Firefox crash occurs when both those machines are turned off and presumably not in a state to carry out a sync update. So right now I am having to use Safari which works fine on the iphoneSE but without my bookmarks of course. All other iphone functions appear to be working as expected. Any advice or a solution would be welcome please. Regards. Phil Lazenby.

Thanks for the response. Is your iPhone jailbroken?

Jailbreak: modify (a smartphone or other electronic device) to remove restrictions imposed by the manufacturer or operator, e.g. to allow the installation of unauthorized software.

With the limitations of the iOS platform, there is not much troubleshooting that can be completed on your end. It seems that upon investigation, this issue is common, but not experienced by a large amount of users. I'll have to escalate this to see if we can get some information about this.

One thing I would try and ask for is the following, but it's not easy: 1. Go to Settings 2. Privacy 3. Analytics 4. Analytics data 5. Look/take a screenshot - Side note: The title of the crash may say Firefox or something similar, if you see it, please send it. 6. Reproduce the crash 7. Go back into Analytics data and see if there is a new data report of a crash. 8. If there is, please copy all the data to a place list pastebin.mozilla.org for review here.

Thanks!

Yes, there was a Firefox for iOS 8.1 update released on July 31. And I was informed it specifically had a fix for your type of crash. A 8.1.1 update also just came out yesterday on August 4. Which I assume has even more fixes. :)

I'd bookmark this link to check for Firefox updates whenever you encounter weird issues like this in the future: https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/firefox-web-browser/id989804926
