When multi-process windows in Firefox is enabled then Firefox will use more memory and may be less responsive. Try to disable multi-process windows in Firefox to see if that has effect.

You can disable multi-process windows in Firefox by setting these prefs to false on the about:config page.

  • browser.tabs.remote.autostart = false
  • browser.tabs.remote.autostart.2 = false

You can open the about:config page: via the location/address bar. You can accept the warning and click "I'll be careful" to continue.


Try to create a new profile to test if your current profile is causing the problem.

If the new profile works then you can transfer files from a previously used profile to the new profile, but be cautious not to copy corrupted files to avoid carrying over problems.

According to the bug pointed to in the crash report, this crash type might have been fixed in Firefox 55.

If you suffer it a lot, you are welcome to install Firefox Beta (currently 55) and report back if you no longer seem to experience the crash. Note however that due to upcoming profile changes in 55 and therefor the inability to downgrade using that profile (i.e. sharing your current 54 default profile with Beta), it would be best to create a separate profile, though this should happen automatically. More about being cautious in such situations can be found here.

If you haven't already, could you test in Firefox's Safe Mode? In Safe Mode, Firefox temporarily deactivates extensions, hardware acceleration, and some other advanced features to help you assess whether these are causing the problem.

If Firefox is not running: Hold down the Shift key when starting Firefox.

If Firefox is running: You can restart Firefox in Safe Mode using either:

  • "3-bar" menu button > "?" button > Restart with Add-ons Disabled
  • Help menu > Restart with Add-ons Disabled

and OK the restart.

Both scenarios: A small dialog should appear. Click "Start in Safe Mode" (not Refresh).

Any improvement? That may at least make it easy to make the first change suggested by cor-el (easier than editing a settings file...).
