Why does Firefox often fail when I try to send a message through AOL mail?

Among other problems, I'm often unable to send messages to AOL mail. The display says "connecting" and the wheel spins forever. This happens often. When it happens I can get around it sometimes by opening another instance of Firefox and AOL mail and sending. I also have problems using various internet services like banking when I transition from one screen, like "accounts" to another, like "transfers." The "connecting" display comes up and never ends. My computer uses Win 7 ultimate 64bit. I have a feeling the problems are related.
