I have been referred by Firefox to particular articles in Help but on 6 different instances I got "Page Not Found".
In addition, I keep getting prompted to update Firefox when I, in fact have the current version. When I clicked on update in the popup anyway I got an error message. Has anyone else experienced any of this? It looks very suspicious.

Note that Firefox 53.0 has been released.

If you are talking about in-product Firefox links that lead to a support.mozilla.org page, that has been fixed at the moment. We had to do a temporary roll back from Lithium to the old custom Kitsune platform. More info is at https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/forums/contributors/712410
If you are talking about the pop-ups asking you to update Firefox then that's a fake. Firefox should only be updated from within and has its own background update manager so these pop ups are misleading. Please see the article [[I found a fake Firefox update] for more information.
In addition to the above :
Good for you be on the alert !
Scammers have been using this tactic, trying to get users to download and infect their computer.
Hard to get rid off, as they will change their URL on a daily basis.
You could consider an ad-blocking add-on like :
