Why is Mozilla so avasive to its users?
Its taken a long time to figure out how to register with Mozzilla, in order to get help, why is mozzilla so uncontactable and evasive to its users?
Chosen solution
Regarding the systems integration popup bug, see this post.
You don't have to make one account POP (in fact, IMAP is usually the recommended setup), but you may be getting messages mixed up if both accounts are using the same default SMTP server for sending. Under Tools/Account Settings/accountname, check that the Outgoing Server (SMTP) for the Sky account is something like smtp.tools.sky.com, while for the Gmail account it is smtp.gmail.com. If the Sky smtp server isn't present, add it under Tools/Account Settings/Outgoing Server (SMTP) (use smtp.tools.sky.com on port 465, SSL/TLS, normal password, username@sky.com),

Hi tyler4402, you got in! So what's your actual question that you need help with?
Note: this support site is being completely changed to a different platform next year. Hopefully it will be easier to search and register then.
Hi Jscher many thanks for your reply, but I must reiterate that finding a kind person to answer direct question on Mozzilla is most time consuming for Mozzy users, as is the patrolling through loads of Q&A pages which often does not propperly answer the question. As a new Thunderbird user there are a few things I don't understand and one is the System Integration box on startup, what is it for, and as the email and feeds check boxes are both greyed out do I need System Integration, and if not how do I remove it from startup? I have two email addresses in Thunderbird, one is a gmail account and the other is a Sky account, it would seem that Thunderbird has set them both up with Imap settings, and as I did want to keep the Sky account for more personal emails, and the gmail for more general email, but at the moment I get the same emails sent to both accounts, is there a way to dedicate mail to either account, or to do this should one account be Pop? Best regards Robert.
Many thanks for your guidance, once explained I could understand the problem and I have now altered the settings to suit, and all seems to be running ok, so I will call both of my problems solved. Best of regards Robert.
Hi again, sorry I thought that your last instructions had solved my problem but I still have a problem with the mail accounts. After altering the port number as suggested to 465 for the Sky account I though that the prob had been solved, but my friends have since been asking if I had recieved their mails, unfortunately I had not, so when I tried putting the port number on the Sky account back to 993 which is the same port as the gmail account 284 mails came into the inbox, now I presume both the accounts will get the same mails again? Any more ideas will be most welcome, regards Robert.
Hi tyler4402, your incoming mail and outgoing mail will definitely be on different ports, and usually different servers. The above info (smtp.tools.sky.com on port 465) was for outgoing mail only. Hopefully you have your incoming mail working now but, if not, you could double-check the settings recommended by your mail service provider.
Many thanks for answering again Now I am confused as when I click onto the Mozzilla Account Settings there is a server name box where I have inserted the "imap.tools. sky.com" but there is only one port box shown where the port number can be inserted, so if the outgoing "smtp?" Sky port is 465 where is the box to insert the > incoming port number whatever that is??
The "imap.gmail.com" account works ok with port 993 inserted if this is the outgoing port? but again in the Mozzilla Account Settings there is no incomong port shown as there is in Windows Live Mail where both incoming and outgoing ports are shown and where one of the ports is usually 25. Maybe the Sky account should be PoP ? regards Robert
Hi tyler4402, in that dialog, I think the outgoing servers usually appear at the bottom of the left column. (I don't have Thunderbird on this computer, so i can't check at the moment.)
IMAP is the protocol to receive mail. Incoming.
SMTP is the protocol to send mail. Outgoing.
Hi jscher, there is no incoming server listed in the menu, but yes there is a smtp outgoing server listed in the left hand menu, and when clicked on it shows the > Outgoing server smtp settings (box) with the two accounts for smtp.gmail.com (default) & Sky mail -smtp.tools.sky.com When each of the addresses are clicked on, they both show in the box for "Details of selected server:" the same port 465 which I now presume is outgoing. Still nothing listed as incoming, so I will try port 465 on both accounts for a short time to see if it makes any difference, but I am still confused as as you see sorting out email is not my strong point :-)
Modified
When you are viewing the Account settings dialog, each incoming account has a section in the left column. Under the account name, you should see Server Settings, Copies & folders, Composition & Addressing, Junk Settings, Synchronization & Storage, Return Receipts, and Security. If the icon at the very left is > click that to expand the list.
It's that first one, Sever Settings, where you enter your IMAP server name and port number.
Hi Jscher. thanks foryour patience, yes I found the > to expand the folders on day one, I can't find anything wrong with the setup except there is no inbound port showing for incoming mail as with other email prog's. Now when I try to send mail from the Sky account I get a massage "Mail Server myname@sky.com is not a imap4 server" so now nothing is moving in or out of the Sky account The way I have to select names from my address book is also quite odd, as if I click (To: ) to bring up the address book nothing happens, I have to click Tools > Address Book, then the name. If I try to send mail from My Sky account to my Gmail account by this method I open the address book and select myname@sky but when the email form appears it shows mail to myname @gmail.com to: myname@gmail.com I have appended a screen print to see if someone can see what I am doing wrong

I think you need to set the IMAP (incoming mail) port to 993 first before you can tell whether there is a problem with the SMTP setting.
Sorry Jscher, I have tried every combination of port number I can think of, and in order to attain a clean start I uninstalled the program and did a reg clean then reinstalled it and Thunderbird inserted the same ports and settings which I had tried to remove so there must have been something left, now I can receive mail into the gmail account but I cannot send out as I get a message saying > "The mail server sent an incorrect greeting *Ok Gimap ready for " then a load of numbers etc, I have had a mail from Google saying "Unauthenticated email" error message when sending emails. The Sky account now will not send mail out or recieve at all whatever ports I try, and if I try to send an email from Sky to my gmail account it still insists that it is sending from gmail to gmail, yet the settings are just as they should be i.e smtp.tools.sky.com port 465 and imap.gmail.com port 993 Now I have no idea what's going on. Any more ideas most welcome, regards Robert
Hi Robert, your Thunderbird data, including mail and account settings, is stored together in a profile folder. You do not want to remove that folder, the best way to experiment with settings is still to use the Account Settings dialog.
I do not know what is going wrong with your settings. However, my understanding is you need this:
Under username@sky.com -- not under Gmail -- Server Settings:
imap.tools.sky.com => port 993
But when I check the support pages, it discourages you from using IMAP on desktop clients, although it recommends IMAP for mobile clients. ???
Mobile: https://www.sky.com/help/articles/get-emails-on-your-mobile-or-tablet Desktop: https://www.sky.com/help/articles/get-emails-on-your-windows-desktop-client
I don't understand the discrepancy. Maybe they are blocking IMAP for some access methods??
Hi Jscher, yesterday I again uninstalled Thunderbird with the Revo uninstaller and did another reg clean, after the reinstall Thunderbird inserted the same port numbers etc. Since then I have tried all the different combinations of port and imap/smtp settings again, and now I can receive mail into the gmail account but it will not send mail out as I get the message "The mail server has sent an incorrect greeting etc" so it is more than just mixed up ports its some form af corruption and I guess the corruption is still there, I would have though that Revo would get rid of all the corrupt files and a new clean install would insert a new program, obviously not. Now I have no more ideas except to use another email program, as its beaten me.
Modified
Hi Robert, I am not familiar with what Revo removes. If it had removed your profile folder, none of your old mail would be visible when you start Firefox. Was that the situation?
For Gmail issues, could you check this article: Thunderbird and Gmail.
If you want to try setting up from scratch, you can create a new profile. However, I would wait for a more experienced user to comment on that.
Hi again Jscher thanks for your time and help, Revo is the best uninstaller, but you have to be careful what you click on to remove the left over reg strings after uninstalling a program, the first program I used was CC leaner which is quite safe and easy to use but not as thorough. I checked out the links you kindly sent and one went through the setup process for a google address on mail clients using imap and again, it demonstrated the inbound process with the port number being default of 993 which I have tried over and over again, but it also highlighted the out going server settings being smtp.gmail or smtp.sky with the port number given for SSL as 465 and TLSSTARTTLS as 587, which is odd as there is no box to put a port number in : in the Thunderbird account settings, I wonder if that is something to do with the problem, regards Robert
Hi, here is an update After a long weekend of bashing my head against the wall I decided to uninstall Thunderbird again using Revo uninstaller which I did and used the deepest Revo scan to uninstall all associated registry strings, and this time it worked and after reinstalling Thunderbird will now send and receive using both accounts, the only problem is I have zapped my most up to date address book (what a dummy) So now I am actually where I was when I first asked the question as both accounts work but I get the same mails in each account, so I am presuming Thunderbird has used the same in and out ports as default for both accounts. I think most of my problem is caused by my own confusion, and I suppose that the same outgoing smtp port 465 is ok for both accounts, but now I am wondering if a different Incoming port number for the Sky account will solve the problem, regards Robert
