How do I make firefox allow multiple tabs to play sounds simultaneously?

Recent changes to Firefox (I think around v48?) have made the audio API to mute all but the last active audio. While this is often desirable, I occasionally want to multitask - for instance, throw a youtube video on in the background while I have some HTML5 app I'm currently interacting with. When this happens, the audio API will pause the video in favour of the app.

Muting the foreground tab and restarting the video is usually a possibility, but not always - I've found some pages ignore a muted tab and take over the audio API anyway. Additionally, it will sometimes cause an autoplaying ad to cut out what I was actually interested in. Note, as well, that this is not a situation that an adblocker will help with; I want the audio API to accept input from two tabs simultaneously as used to happen even after muting tabs was a possibility until recently.

Is there a way to disable the audio API's requirement for exclusive use?
