I refreshed Firefox and it destroyed all my tabs

I was invited to "refresh Firefox" (no warning as to potential loss of data was given) and I did it. When Firefox restarted once "refreshed", I had lost over 50 extremely important tabs.

I have followed some of the help messages on here to look into the "Old Firefox data" folder. There are lots of things in there, and they contain my previous tabs URLs (I can see this by opening the files with a text editor).

Nevertheless "Restore Previous Session" is grayed out in the History menu... How do I turn these files back into tabs? Or do I have to use a URL extractor and do it manually? I'm shocked at this dangerous and pointless feature and at what just happened to my data without a single warning...
