Chosen solution

Create a new "account" in Thunderbird, this time make sure you say to use POP instead of IMAP:

Thunderbird Menu: Tools: Account Settings. Click the "Account Actions" button in the bottom left and choose "Add Mail Account".

Enter your name, E-mail address, and password, then click the "Continue" button.

Now you will see one of the two examples I have attached as a picture here.

In the first example, you will see a "radio button" choice in the middle for either IMAP (remote folders) or POP3 (keep mail on your computer). Make sure that POP3 is chosen, then continue.

If what you see is like my second example, then beside Incoming is a button that you can click on to change it from IMAP to POP3. Continue from there.

Once your new account in Thunderbird is working, then delete the non-working one from Account Settings. Select the non-working account, click the "Account Actions" button, and choose "Remove Account".
