Browser is being hijacked please help

Posted

Tabs are opening by themselves to various sites. I've added the urls that are presently opened against my will below. On pages I've opened myself random words are being highlighted/enlarged in blue, and there's this green-arrows-in-a-circle symbol next to them. I've included a screenshot image of an example of that. This stuff isn't happening w/my other browsers. Please help me fix this mess. FF is my go-to browser. Thank you in advance for any help you can offer. Bye for now.

hello, this sounds like a problem possibly caused by adware on your pc.

  1. please go to the firefox menu ≡ > addons > extensions & remove any suspicious entries (toolbars, things that you have not installed intentionally, don't know what purpose they serve, etc).
  2. also go to the windows control panel / programs and remove all toolbars or potentially unwanted software from there.
  3. finally, run a full scan of your system with different security tools like the free version of malwarebytes & adwcleaner, which are specialised in adware and browser hijackers.

After the above; Adblock Plus {web link} Blocks annoying video ads on YouTube, Facebook ads, banners and much more. Adblock Plus blocks all annoying ads, and supports websites by not blocking unobtrusive ads by default (configurable).

Adblock Plus Pop-up Addon {web link} Adblock Plus Pop-up Addon extends the blocking functionality of Adblock Plus to those annoying pop-up windows that open on mouse clicks and other user actions.

This problem started yesterday. Neither of my other browsers (IE & Google Chrome) have been "infected". or whatever the term/problem is. Neither AdAware, or BitDefender found anything bad. None of the Adblock addons (which I already had) have been effective in dealing w/this problem. I haven't, knowingly, downloaded anything lately. Certainly not any toolbars.

The problem seems to be just with the FireFox browser. The problem started yesterday when, also, a failed/blocked attempt was made to access my Gmail account with some kind "unsecured" app by someone in Syria.

Further information can be found in the Troubleshoot Firefox issues caused by malware article.

Run most or all of the listed malware scanners. Each works differently. If one program misses something, another may pick it up.

Thank you all for your time and energy and your attempts to help me. I uninstalled and reinstalled a "refreshed" version of FF and the problem has been remedied.

P.P.S. Looks like the "Savogram" add-on (it's for using Instagram) may have been the culprit. I just now read the newest reviews and since the creators made their latest update other users have had the same problems that I did
